Archbishop Øystein
Øystein Erlendsson served as Archbishop of Nidaros in the mid-12th century.
In 1161, he consecrated the Chapel of St John in Nidaros Cathedral and performed the first coronation in the Nordic countries when seven-year-old Magnus Erlingsson was crowned in Bergen in 1163/64. Øystein Erlendsson died in 1188 and was buried in the cathedral. In 1229, he was beatified and venerated as a local saint (Augustinus Nidrosiensis). His mortal remains were placed in a silver-gilt casket, which was destroyed during the Reformation.
The statue
Øystein Erlendsson is Nidaros Cathedral’s great builder. He built both the transept and the chapter house and is depicted with a model of the church in his hands.
