The prophet Ezekiel
The prophet Ezekiel was a mystic who predicted the destruction of Jerusalem.
The prophet Ezekiel is one of the four great prophets of the Old Testament. He was above all the seer and mystic amongst the prophets. Ezekiel is said to have predicted both the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE and the rebuilding of the Second Temple. The Book of Ezekiel is written as one long vision. One of the things he sees are the four living beings, the eagle, lion, ox and people, which were subsequently used as symbols of the Evangelists.
Central to his visions are a set of shining, interlocking wheels. Many people have tried to interpret their meaning. Some have suggested that they are a metaphor for the power of nature, while others have interpreted them as a description of a spaceship.
The statue
The statue of Ezekiel has a fanatical expression as he looks up to heaven, his body lean and tense. On his lap he holds the two interlocking wheels from his prophetic vision.
