The prophet Isaiah
In 700 BCE, Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would appear on Earth.
The prophet Isaiah lived in Jerusalem around 700 years before Jesus. He was the most important prophet of his day. From the Middle Ages onward, Isaiah was depicted with a flowering twig in his hand – a reference to the prophecy in which Jesus is compared to a branch that grows out from the trunk of Jesse.
The statue
On the plinth beneath the statue, Jesse, from whom the branch emerged, is depicted as a sleeping stump rooted to the ground. Isaiah can also be recognised as a prophet by his special cap, which in medieval art represented a prophet.
